The William Byrd softball team defeated Liberty High School on Tuesday on a walk-off home run by Haleigh Vaughan. The big fly gave the Terriers at 6-5 win in Vinton.
Liberty struck first in this game but Byrd put a three-spot on the board in the fourth. Makayla Bell had a single and Addison Clark’s home run was the big blow in the inning as the two teams battled to a 5-5 tie after six innings.

Byrd had nine total hits, with Vaughan and Sydney Blewett each collecting multiple hits. Vaughan was three-for-four, including the dinger that sent the crowd home in the bottom of the seventh.

Clark also pitched and picked up the win, allowing nine hits over seven innings and fanning eight.
With the win the Terriers are now 1-1. Byrd opened the season with a 13-6 loss to Christiansburg in Vinton last week. The game was tied at 4-4 through five innings but the Blue Demons pulled away in the late going.
Byrd outhit the visitors, nine to eight, with Blewett collecting three hits, including a triple. Vaughan and Clark also had multiple hit games for the Terriers.
Clark took the loss on the mound, pitching five and a third innings before she was relieved by Sara Lang.
The Terriers are back in action today with a game at Cave Spring, their last before spring break.
