Public Works employees were busy last week delivering the 2017 town calendars.
The calendars supply a wealth of information about Vinton, including dates of special events, holiday schedules, classes offered by the Senior Citizen Center and the library, due dates for tax and utility bills, important Town of Vinton phone numbers, and those hard-to-remember refuse and recycling collection schedules (by the month and at-a-glance for the year as a whole).
Many hours of work go into producing the town calendar each year, plus the man-hours spent in delivery.
A calendar committee made up of town employees from different departments comes up with a theme, gathers photographs, and compiles the calendar. This year’s committee included Special Programs Director Mary Beth Layman as chairperson, along with Sherri Winkler in charge of graphic design and layout, Karla Turman, Brandon Hill, Susan Johnson, Jill Acker, and GinaMarie Overstreet.
The theme this year is “A New Day in Vinton.”
“The calendar photos feature a majority of new happenings and local scenes in Vinton,” said Layman. “The town staff and council wanted to share wonderful progress, such as the new benches and wayfinding signs, new businesses, the HIVE Business Incubator Center, the renovated Farmers’ Market stage, and renovation and re-use of the historic Roland E. Cook Elementary as apartments. We also featured some event photos.”
The idea for the Town calendar originated with former Town Manager Chris Lawrence several years ago. The town had been distributing magnets displaying the recycling schedule in packets with brochures from several different town departments. The calendar format was adopted to include all the information that might be needed by new and longtime residents.
This year 4,000 copies of the calendar were printed and distributed. Chocklett Press was once again selected to publish the calendars in a bidding process.
If you are a Vinton resident and did not receive your copy call Public Works at 983-0646 or stop by the Vinton Library or Vinton Area Chamber of Commerce, where a few extra calendars are available. The town also distributes the calendars to new residents and businesses when they contact the Town of Vinton about water accounts, business licenses, etc.
