The William Byrd boys are in the NIT. The Terriers are in the eight school field of basketball teams participating in the Northside Invitational Tournament at Northside High School.
The tournament was scheduled to open on Wednesday, with William Byrd playing Blacksburg in the opening round. Other first round games had Giles against North Cross, Chathan against Franklin County and Christiansburg against Northside.
The second round round is today, Thursday, and if Byrd won Wednesday the Terriers would play the winner of the Giles-North Cross game at 6 pm. If Byrd lost Wednesday they would play the Northside-Christiansburg loser at 4:15 pm on Thursday.
The championship game is scheduled for 7:45 pm on Saturday. All eight teams will play Saturday with a seventh place game at 2:30 pm, a fifth place game at 4:15 pm and a third place game at 6 pm.
Byrd came into the tournament with a 4-3 record after losing to undefeated Northside in Vinton last Friday, 72-42. The 8-0 Vikings led just 15-14 after the first quarter but increased the lead to 10 at the half, 33-23. They scored 11 in the third quarter and held Byrd to three to go up 44-26 and won going away. J.J. Seymore, Casey Smith and Terrell Smith had 10 pints each to lead the Byrd scoring.
The Terriers will open the new year at home next week, hosting Bassett on Tuesday, January 2.
