The William Byrd softball team will take a 5-1 record to Staunton River Friday night for a Blue Ridge District softball game. The Golden Eagles are 4-2, but undefeated in district play.
Byrd swept a doubleheader from William Fleming in Vinton last Friday, shutting out the Colonels in both games. It was a fitting time for “Senior Night,” as the Terriers honored seniors Hallie Cox, Rachel Cruff and Erin Courtemanche.
Cox made it a memorable night by tossing a no-hitter in the opener as Byrd took a 16-0 win. Courtemanche, Logan Pekala and Haleigh Vaughan had multiple hits and Courtemanche had two home runs and four runs batted in. Pekala had a triple and Vaughan smacked a double.
In the second game Byrd won 17-0. Cox pitched the first inning before giving way to Chloe Varney, who fanned four and allowed one hit, the only Fleming hit of the night in the two games combined.
Pekala, Vaughan and Brooklyn Peters had multiple hits as Byrd banged out 11 hits as a team. Keely Hoal had four runs batted in.
Byrd was scheduled to play at Northside Tuesday but that game was postponed. Next Tuesday, May 25, Franklin County is here.
