The Sandlot Super Bowl football tournament for youth teams is underway, with championship finals scheduled for November 12 at Salem Stadium in three age groups. Champions will be crowned in the PeeWee, Little and Junior Divisions.
The PeeWee Division is for eight and under players. The 11-team tournament was scheduled to begin Wednesday with the Vinton team meeting the Salem Spartans. If Vinton won Wednesday the Terriers will play at 10:30 am Saturday at Spartan Field, in front of Salem High School. Seeds for the PeeWees are drawn at random, as the PeeWees don’t keep score during the regular season.
Little Division games, for 10 and under players, opened last Saturday and the Vinton team debuted with a 6-0 win over Salem. The Little Division is seeded by season record and Vinton advances to play the top-seeded Cave Spring team Saturday at Bogle Stadium at noon. There are 13 teams in the Little Division tournament.
In the Junior Division, for age 12 and under teams, Vinton is the sixth seed among nine teams. The Terriers will open Saturday with a quarterfinal game against North Roanoke at 3 pm at Spartan Field.
Semifinals in all three divisions are November 4 at Bogle and the Sandlot Super Bowl championship games are all at Salem Stadium the following weekend.
