The Roanoke Valley Republican Women (RVRW) hosted their ninth annual gala at the Vinton War Memorial on April 21— the third gala named for Mildred Scott of Vinton, the former chair of the organization.
Scott said the RVRW organization was formed 42 years ago; she has been a member for 29 of those years. Not only does Scott organize the event— as a well-known local caterer, she spends the day preparing the banquet as well.
About 125 guests attended the gala including many dignitaries well known in Republican circles. Virginia’s 71st governor (from 2010-2014), Bob McDonnell, was there.
Virginia Delegate Nick Freitas, who is running for the United States Senate against Tim Kaine, was another guest. Virginia Delegate Ben Cline, who is running for Bob Goodlatte’s seat in the House of Representatives, also was in attendance.
Other local Republican leaders at the gala included Virginia State Senator David Suetterlein, Virginia Delegate Chris Head, Roanoke County Supervisors Jason Peters, Phil North, and Joe McNamara, Roanoke County Sheriff Eric Orange, and Sixth Congressional District Republican Committee Chair Jennifer Brown,
Scott discourages political speeches at the gala. The only remarks came from Jackie Bledsoe, president of the RVRW, who introduced and welcomed guests, delivered the invocation, and led the Pledge of Allegiance. Socializing and enjoying the banquet and the music, along with bidding on a silent auction, took up the remainder of the evening.
