William Byrd High School senior Richard Qiu (second from left) and his teammate Matthew Svec from Hidden Valley High School won first place in the Cellular and Molecular Biology category at the Virginia State Science and Engineering Fair with their project “Diabetes-Mediated Dysregulation of the Blood-Brain Barrier: Concept, Mechanism, and Implications.” Both are also students at the Roanoke Valley Governor’s School. The event was held this year at the Berglund Center in Roanoke on April 14.
