Two Vinton softball teams are competing in the Roanoke Area Youth Softball Association tournaments at the James I. Moyer Complex in Salem this week.
The event has six different tournaments for three age groups, with two classes each for U10, U12 and U16 players. Vinton is fielding teams is the higher classification of both the U10 and U12 groups.
The Vinton U10 team was 2-0 at press time with wins over South County Blue and Salem. The Vinton All-Stars are scheduled to play for the championship Friday at 6 pm against the survivor from the losers’ bracket. Vinton would have two chances to win the championship with a game at 6 pm and a second chance at 8 pm if needed.
The U12 Vinton All-Stars lost their opener to the South County Sluggers on Monday. Vinton was scheduled to play Craig County in a losers’ bracket game on Wednesday. The championship is Friday, and if Vinton survives the losers’ bracket the All-Stars would have to beat the winners’ bracket team twice to win the championship.
Dixie League baseball post-season tournaments begin on Wednesday of next week, also at the Moyer Complex. Vinton will field teams in the AAA tournament, for 10 and under boys, and the O-Zone tournament, for 12 and unders. The brackets will be announced later this week, but both teams are expected to play on opening night, July 5, at Moyer.
