The Roanoke College baseball team is 9-2 after defeating Ferrum College at Salem Memorial Ballpark on Tuesday afternoon. Will Black had four hits as the Maroons took a 9-5 win.
Black was 4-for-5 on the day with three RBI and two runs scored. Dan Brodeur was 3-for-4 with three RBI and three runs scored for the Maroons while Sean Guida and Collier Donald each had a pair of hits in the win.
Sal Trancucci tossed two and a third innings of relief to improve to 2-0 on the season. He allowed three hits and one run. John Ruhlman picked up the three inning save, allowing one hit and striking out two.
The Maroons have been on a roll, sweeping William Peace in an exciting doubleheader on Saturday as they won both games 8-7 in walk-off fashion. In the opener Roanoke came from 7-1 behind to score four in the seventh and three in the bottom of the ninth for a walk off win. Drew Mikula delivered an RBI single to plate the winning run.
With the score 7-1 in the bottom of the seventh inning, RC loaded the bases with one out. Will Decker was hit by a pitch to bring in one run, then Kiley singled down the right field line to score a pair of runs and make it a 7-4 game. Mikula followed a sacrifice fly to plate Decker and make the score 7-5.
In the ninth, Dean Hermanson and Sam Watson singled to open the inning then Collier Donald walked to load the bases.
The next batter Decker bunted and the ball was misplayed allowing Hermanson to score to make it 7-6. The tying run then came in on a balk call.
After Kiley walked, Mikula singled down to left field to score Decker and give RC the win.
In the nightcap Roanoke completed the sweep with an extra inning walk-off hit by Joe Kitlas to top WPU, also 8-7, in game two.
In the bottom of the ninth, Donald singled to start the inning and moved to second on a throwing error by WPU. Two batters later, Kitlas pinch hit and singled down the line to bring Donald home and give RC the sweep.
Matt Henderlite pitched the ninth, giving up one hit to get the win and improve to 3-0 on the season. Donald finished with three hits for RC. Black and Cody Shell each had two hits, while Hermanson drove in three runs.
On Sunday Penn State-Harrisburg beat RC, 9-6, for the Maroons’ second loss of the season. Kiley led RC with two RBI, Mikula went 3-for-5 on the day while Hermanson tallied two hits, including a double.
The Maroons are back home this Saturday for a doubleheader against Susquehanna, with games scheduled for noon and 2:30 pm.
