Roanoke County Public Library kicks off Summer Reading activities for all ages
Fight summer “slide” and earn prizes, too, by participating in a Roanoke County Public Library summer reading program.
For years, the Roanoke County Public Library has offered challenging and fun summer reading activities and this year is no different, with programs for infants to seniors.
- Children’s Program, Ages 0-11– Parents have a choice when signing their child up for Summer Reading this year. Independent Reader is intended for children ages 7 to 11 years old.
Reading Together is most appropriate for infant to 6 years old. Both age groups have a BINGO sheet where children can do a variety of activities throughout the summer. Kids may find BINGO two times and even choose to do all of the activities for the third level of prizes.
Prizes include books, treasure box prize, and extra incentives from McDonald’s, the Salem Red Sox, and Green Ridge Recreation Center. Something new this year is a $10 “fine- forgiveness” card that will be given as a prize to children after completing each prize level.
The cards will be valid through the end of August for up to $30 in fine-forgiveness.
Lots of fun activities are planned for the summer, including magicians, animal shows, story times, and craft programs. A more detailed program description and an event list can be found on the library’s website.
Registration is under way at any library branch, and all reading logs must be turned in by August 5.
- Teen Program, Ages 11-18 – Teens and tweens have the opportunity to win prizes and coupons, including draw-string bags, books, color changing water bottles, 3D tattoos, and coupons, to name a few. Like the Children’s program, teens also have the opportunity to gain up to $30 in fine-forgiveness cards. After participants read for 25 hours, they will earn drawing entries for a $100 gift card.
The Teen Summer Reading Program began on June 5 and ends August 4. In addition to reading and winning, special events and activities are scheduled throughout the summer at all Roanoke County Public Library locations. Event information for the Teen Summer Reading Program can be found on the library’s website. Participants must sign up in person.
- Adult Program, Ages 18+ – Each participant must read or listen to five books, eBooks, or audiobooks. For each book read or listened to, the participant will complete a ratings slip with the title, author, and a rating from loved it to hated it. Return the completed log to your library by August 5 to receive an infuser water bottle and to be entered in a grand prize drawing at your library branch. Registrations are under way at any library branch; the program ends August 4.
