Herman L. Horn Elementary School in Vinton hosted its second annual Character Ball in the school cafeteria on the evening of October 25.
Students were invited to dress as their favorite book characters with families welcome to participate as well. The Lynn family (Megan, Todd, and Abby) came as Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory; Frog and Toad made an appearance, along with the Cat in the Hat, and many superheroes and princesses.
There was dancing, with music provided by DJ Jonah Cortez, black and white cupcakes, free books for students, and a costume contest.
The four winners of the costume contest were “Einstein” Ace Adkins, “Oompa-Loompa” Abby Lynn, “Rainbow Fish” Scottie Leonard, and “Tin Man” Jett Mangus.
Mangus was a winner last year for his “Scarecrow” costume and next year plans to make his third appearance from the “Wizard of Oz” as the Cowardly Lion. Adkins and Leonard also won in last year’s contest.
The prize once again was a very large chocolate bar.
The event was organized by the Title I personnel at Herman L. Horn, including Emily Murray, Ginny Barton, Sandy Hunt, Dorr Booan, media specialist Bradley Yarbrough, and Parental Involvement Specialist Phyllis Satterfield.
Many teachers dressed for the occasion, as did HLH Principal Julie Sandzimier and Assistant Principal Theresa Kabath. All Herman L. Horn students and their families were invited to the event.
Next on the HLH schedule is a Fun Run on November 2.
