The William Byrd girls swept a home-and-home soccer series with Blue Ridge District rival Northside. Byrd won at Northside last Friday, 1-0, and took a 5-1 win over the Vikings in Vinton Tuesday.
On Friday Byrd outshot the Vikings, 23-11, but didn’t score until late the game. Kelly O’Connor finally broke the tie with 19 minutes remaining in the game and the Terrier defense stiffened down the stretch.
On Tuesday O’Connor picked up where she left off, scoring the first goal of the game six minutes into the contest with an assist from Kathryn Woodson. Jenna Rozenboom scored the second goal off another assist from Woodson but Northside pulled within one, making the game 2-1.
Byrd kept the pressure on and the Terriers were able to get two more goals before the half. Woodson and Saje Carter both scored off assists from O’Connor to give Byrd a 4-1 lead the break.
The second half proved to be more of the same. Byrd continued bringing strong pressure and the girls were able to stretch the lead, with the final goal of the game coming from Skylar Mathis.
“After a hard fought battle on Friday it was nice to see a dominating performance from our girls,” said coach Molly Deacon.
Byrd has a rematch with undefeated Lord Botetourt at home tonight, followed by a trip to Fort Defiance on Friday. The Terriers are 4-7-1 overall and 3-1-1 in the district.
