The William Byrd girls were at William Fleming to open the softball season with a varsity doubleheader last Friday. The Terriers, who are the reigning state champions going back to the 2019 season, had little trouble sweeping the Colonels, 16-0 and 14-4.
In the opener senior Hallie Cox pitched an opening day no hitter, striking out seven and walking one. Byrd banged out 11 hits, including a home run by Brooklyn Peters. Sydney Blewett, Maddy Tuck, Erin Courtmanche and Haleigh Vaughan had two hits each.
Freshman Chloe Varney pitched the second game, allowing two hits and four runs over four innings to pick up the win. Courtemanche, Haleigh Vaughan, Tuck, Keely Hoal, Rachel Cruff and Logan Pekala all knocked in runs for the Terriers. Amber and Haleigh Vaughn had two hits each.
The Terriers will be back in action Friday to play a jayvee-varsity doubleheader at Franklin County. Next Tuesday Byrd will be in Vinton to host Lord Botetourt in the home opener.
