The William Byrd girls battled to a tie in a soccer game against Staunton River last Friday. Kelly O’Connor scored a late goal for a 1-1 final in Moneta.
“Our performance against Staunton River was probably the best soccer we have played all season,” said coach Molly Deacon. “We controlled most of the first half, out-shooting the Eagles 12-4 but unfortunately could not put one in the net.”
Byrd trailed 1-0 with the game getting late, but O’Connor found the back of the net to tie the game at 1-1 with under five minutes to play. Overtime failed to settle things and the game ended in a 1-1 draw. Gracie Tyus had 10 saves LB.
Byrd is now 2-7-1 on the season and 1-1-1 in the Blue Ridge District. The girls were rained out of a game with Lord Botetourt on Tuesday and that will be made up on Thursday, May 3, at Patterson Stadium.
Tomorrow Byrd will be at Northside for a BRD game, and next Tuesday, May 1, the Vikings come to Vinton.
