The William Byrd girls opened the spring tennis season with a win and a couple losses as they became the first school team to open their season.
The girls dropped a 9-0 match to Lord Botetourt in Vinton last Wednesday in the season opener, but bounced back for a 7-2 win at William Fleming on Friday. On Monday the Terriers were at Northside and dropped a close 5-4 decision to the Vikings at Walrond Park.
“We are a very novice team this year, but that means we have plenty of room to grow,” said coach Kayla Mitchell. “I’m just excited we are able to get back on the courts.”
Seniors on the team are Natalie Mullins and Julie Wang. A solid junior class includes Lexi Aquino, Haley Day, Fallon Franklin, Emilie McCaskill, Timber Raines, Grace Saunders and Kassidy Wrye. Hannah Johnson is the lone sophomore and Callie Lusk and Jenny Nguyen are freshmen.
The Terriers were back in action Wednesday at home against Staunton River, followed by a trip to Franklin County on Friday and a home match with Lord Botetourt next Monday.
