The William Byrd girls improved to 6-2 in soccer with a shutout of Alleghany on Tuesday. The Terriers took an 8-0 win in Low Moor.

Byrd jumped right on the Mountaineers, taking an early lead and dominating the game. The Terriers had a 5-0 lead by the half.

“I loved how we scored 21 seconds into the game,” said coach Tom Brown. “We typically are a slow starting team and I told them I really wanted to come out hard and generate some scoring opportunities in the first five minutes of the game.”

Lexi Williams scored the first goal and later added another. Madison Moses also had two goals and Jensen Chrisley, Jenna Rozenboom, Katie Corrao and Grace Carroll had one goal each. Moses, Corrao, Emma Stevens and Payton Taylor all had assists. Gracie Tyus and Sydney Perrington split time in goal for the shutout.

“We had some of our best possession play tonight,” said Brown. “Girls were working hard making runs, communicating and seeing their options.  As a result, we generated a lot of scoring opportunities. It was a great way to finish up the first half of the season and head into the spring break.”

Byrd also beat Northside last Friday, 2-1, in Vinton. Chrisley scored on a penalty kick and Moses had a goal, with 30 seconds left in the half, off an assist by Kelly O’Connor.

The Vikings cut the lead to 2-1 with three minutes left in regulation but Byrd was able to hang on. Carroll had four saves on a cold, blustery day.

“The weather conditions had a tremendous impact on the game,” said Brown. “We had the wind at our back the first half and it was incredibly difficult to play into the wind in the second half. It wasn’t one of our prettier games, but the girls worked hard for the win.  I was incredibly proud of the effort we gave.”
