The William Byrd golf team will open the season next Tuesday when William Fleming hosts the first Blue Ridge District “Mini Match” of the season. All BRD teams will converge on the Ole Monterey course in Roanoke County as the 2018-19 sports schedule officially begins.
Byrd will return number one Bryce Corkery, a junior, who should one of the top golfers in the area once again. Also returning are Gavin Mullen, Mason Stanley, John Catron and Chris Blankenship, and coach Scott Whitehead has high hopes for freshman Griffin Horacek.
“Those are the only ones I know will be on the team at this time,” said Whitehead. “I should know more by next Monday.”
The Terriers have a min-match at Hanging Rock a week from today, and they’ll play in the annual Bob McLelland Metro tournament on August 8 & 9. The first round will be on Byrd’s home course at Blue Hills and the second round is at the Botetourt Golf and Swim Club.
