The William Byrd girls’ soccer team is 7-2 after defeating two more opponents in the past week. The Terriers shut out Cave Spring at home last Thursday, 4-0, and followed that up with a 2-1 win over Staunton River in Moneta on Tuesday.
Addisyn St. Clair opened the scoring against Cave Spring off an assist from Maddy Simmons just 26 seconds into the game. Byrd increased the lead to 2-0 11 minutes later when Simmons scored off an assist from Anna Milliron, and it was 2-0 at the half.
The combination of Milliron to Simmons struck again midway through the second half, and Simmons scored her third goal of the night off a Riley Firebaugh assist to account for the final score. Kadence Fernatt had seven saves in goal.
On Tuesday Byrd rained 14 shots on the Staunton River goal in the first half but couldn’t find the net. Meanwhile, the host Eagles scored once for a 1-0 halftime lead.
Byrd continued to control the game during the second half and finally leveled the score to 1-1 with 20 minutes remaining when Firebaugh connected with Simmons. Then, with 13 minutes remaining in the second half, right back Katelin Patrick switched the field to left back Ella Ashworth who scored from right outside the 18 yard box, and that proved to be the game winner. Fernatt had six saves for the Terriers.
The girls are back home Friday to host Northside in a big Blue Ridge District match.
