Maddy Simmons scored off a corner kick by Maci Glass late in the first half and that was all the William Byrd girls would need in a soccer win over Staunton River Friday. The Terriers took a 1-0 win in Moneta.
Sophia Chrisley registered the shutout in goal and the Byrd defense was stout in the win. The victory lifted the Byrd girls to 5-2 in Blue Ridge District play with a home game against William Fleming next Tuesday in Vinton.
Both of Byrd’s losses thus far have been to undefeated district rival Lord Botetourt. Last Wednesday in Vinton the Terriers dropped a 2-1 decision to the Cavaliers. The previous meeting, in Daleville, was 3-0 in LB’s favor.
“We played considerably better than the previous week when we traveled to LB,” said Byrd coach Molly Cox. “But we still came up a little short.”
The game was tied 1-1 at the half as Simmons scored for the Terriers off an assist from Ella Ashworth. That score stood until late in the second half when Ally Spangler scored for LB. Chrisley kept the game close with 13 saves.
The girls are now off until next Tuesday, June 1, when they host William Fleming at Patterson Stadium.
