The William Byrd golfers finished sixth among 12 teams at the Region 3D tournament at the Draper Valley Golf Club in Pulaski County Tuesday. Abingdon and Hidden Valley finished one-two and will advance to the state Class 3 tournament at the Glenrochie Country Club in Abingdon on October 11.
As expected, Abingdon won the tournament with a team score of 302. Hidden Valley gave the favorites a run with a 306 to finish second, and Magna Vista was the odd man out at 309.
Lord Botetourt, who had individuals Ashton Harper and Samir Davidov qualify for the state, was fourth with a team score of 313. Northside was next at 326, and Nick Crawford of the Vikings was medalist and Region 3D Player of the Year. Nick shot a 72, then won a playoff over Hidden Valley’s Slade Aliff and Abingdon’s Grace Addison to win the title.
Byrd had a very respectable team score of 351, led by Clayton Gilmore at 86. Evan Mullen was next at 88, followed by Nathan Carter at 89 and Griffin Horacek at 90 to round out the Byrd scoring. Kendrick South carded 95 and Madeline Cunningham shot a 97.
The tournament concluded the season for the Terriers. They’ll return everyone on the team except two seniors, Horacek and South.
