The William Byrd softball team remained unbeaten with two more wins in the past week. The Terriers were rained out of a game with Lord Botetourt, and that’s scheduled to be made up today.
Last Friday in Vinton the Terriers beat up on neighboring Staunton River, 7-1. Lexi Powell’s first varsity home run, a three run shot, sparked a six run second inning and that was more than enough for Byrd pitcher Mara Strum to work with.
Strum pitched a perfect game into the seventh inning. The perfect game was broken up by an error, and the no-hitter then went by the boards to score River’s only run. Mara finished with a one-hitter, fanning seven and walking none.
Strum, Alexis West, Katie Fuchs and Powell had two hits each for the Terriers. Lexi finished with four runs batted in.
On Saturday at home the Terriers took a 6-2 win over Franklin County. This game was scoreless into the fifth inning when the Eagles scored an unearned run to take a 1-0 lead. However Byrd bounced back with three in the bottom of the inning on four straight hits by Hannah Sowers, Sydney Burton, Fuchs and Powell, who singled in two. Megan Grant singled in the third run.
Franklin County cut the lead to 3-2 in the sixth but again Byrd answered, putting three on the board in the bottom of the inning. Jada Karnes walked, Abby Spotswood singled and Sowers was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Fuchs walked to force in a run and Powell followed with another two-run single.
Strum got another win on the mound with four hits allowed and six strikeouts.
The wins give Byrd a 12-0 record for the season. The Terriers will be at Lord Botetourt tonight, weather permitting, and Friday is a home game for “Senior Night.”
