The William Byrd golfers will be playing for a trophy at the Blue Ridge District golf tournament next week, but that’s about it. The Terriers are already in the regional.
That’s not the case for some other teams in the whacky Virginia High School League system. Of the five teams in the BRD, all have different goals when the BRD tournament is played at the Hanging Rock Golf Club in Roanoke County next Wednesday, September 20.
William Byrd and William Fleming are both Group 4A schools. In Group 4A, everyone goes to the regional. The regional tournament will be September 28 at the Blacksburg Country Club. Byrd and Fleming will both be included, even though Fleming has, by far, the worst scores in the district season and probably the region.
The other three schools in the district are Lord Botetourt, Northside and Staunton River. All three are in Group 3A, and they’re not guaranteed a spot in their regional, except for Lord Botetourt. The Cavaliers will advance by virtue of winning the BRD regular season.
Northside and Staunton River can advance if they win the BRD tournament at Hanging Rock next week. However, if neither Northside or Staunton River wins the tournament, they can still get in as an “at large” selection, which will be determined after all the teams in the region, in Group 3A, finish their district tournaments.
Confusing? Darned right. However, all the Byrd golfers need to worry about right now is trying to win a trophy at the BRD tournament.
