Blacksburg will be the big favorite when the William Byrd golfers compete in the Region 4D tournament today.
The Bruins have not only put up the best scores among the teams participating, they’ll also be playing on their home course. Only the winning team will advance to the state, and it would be a major upset if that is not Blacksburg.
Five individuals, not on Blacksburg’s team, will also be advancing to the state. Byrd has several golfers who could compete for one of those spots, most notably sophomore Bryce Corkery. After wining Blue Ridge District “Player of the Year” honors during the regular season Bryce finished second in the Blue Ridge District tournament last week at the Hanging Rock Golf Course in Roanoke County. His 79 was just one stroke behind the medalist, Brett Pennington of Lord Botetourt.
Botetourt won the district tournament champ, adding to their regular season title. The Cavs shot 326, followed by Northside at 355 and Byrd at 358. Staunton River was next with 368 and William Fleming brought up the rear at 410.
Byrd’s second best round was a 91 by Gavin Mullen. Mason Stanley had a 93 and Beem Sereekun rounded out the scoring with a 95.
