Registered voters in the Vinton Magisterial District have the opportunity to vote in the
Republican Party Primary on June 18 to choose the party’s nominee for the Vinton seat on the
Roanoke County Board of Supervisors. The winner of the primary will represent the Republican
Party on the ballot in the General Election on November 5.
All registered voters may vote whether they are Republicans or not; however, you must reside in the Vinton District.
Two candidates are running for the Republican nomination– Tammy Shepherd and Tim
Greenway. Both grew up and have spent most of their lives in Vinton. Both are realtors.
Shepherd was appointed to serve on the Board of Supervisors by board members in January 2024
to complete the term of Supervisor Jason Peters, who won the November 2023 election to
become Roanoke County Commissioner of the Revenue. Greenway has served the Vinton
District on the Roanoke County School Board since he was elected in 2015.
Voters may cast ballots at their precinct on Election Day (June 18) from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m.; they
may vote absentee by mail if they requested an absentee ballot by June 7; or they may vote early
in-person at the Roanoke County Elections office on Chestnut Street in Vinton or the Brambleton
satellite office at the Brambleton Center (Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. through
June 14, and on two Saturdays, June 8 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., and June 15, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Both candidates shared their background information with The Vinton Messenger for this week’s
edition.
Tammy Shepherd:
My name is Tammy Shepherd and I currently hold a position on the Roanoke County Board of
Supervisors. I was unanimously appointed to the position in January 2024.
Education:
I was born in Roanoke on September 20, 1969. My family soon moved to the Montgomery
Village subdivision in 1972. I attended Hardy Road Elementary (W.E. Cundiff Elementary),
William Byrd Middle and graduated from William Byrd High School in 1987. I want to
recognize my mother and father (Billy and Donna Entsminger), my siblings Todd Entsminger,
Tasha Brady and husband Aaron, and Tanya Donathan and her husband, Tim. My entire
immediate family attended the same schools and graduated from William Byrd High School. My husband Robert Shepherd, children Autumn Radford, Hunter, Dalton and Macy Shepherd are
William Byrd graduates and life-long residents of the Vinton community.
I attended Virginia Western Community College with a focus on business and accounting. These
classes would help prepare me for the next step in my career path as a real estate business
professional.
Business/Work Experience:
I have always been a hard worker and civic minded. I began working for Henry Brabham at the
Lancerlot at the age of 14.
Upon graduating, I went to work for LT McGhee & Co. as the business manager. My duties
included managing all rental units, managing all realtors, their transactions, and running the
entire office. I also obtained my real estate license while working for Leon McGhee and with
him also being a licensed CPA, I helped him prepare for annual taxes including most
bookkeeping duties for the office. In 2001, I decided to step out and sell real estate full-time.
Over the course of the next 10 years, I achieved the Gold Sales Award the first year and soon
achieved the Platinum Award as one of the top sellers in the Roanoke Valley.
In 2018, I decided to step out and start my own real estate company. Tammy Shepherd Realty
Group has become a recognizable staple of Vinton and surrounding areas over the last six years.
We have achieved many milestones and currently have over 20 realtors and support staff
working in our office located at 116 S. Poplar Street in Vinton. With the support of my family
and our real estate teammates, we will continue to grow into the future.
I have been a civic minded individual and volunteered my time for many local organizations.
Most of these are either real estate-driven or supporting the William Byrd community. I have
also been a Board Member of many of the local real estate home-owner association boards and,
also, was recently a member of the Board of Equalization for Roanoke County.
My many organizations and duties are listed below:
- William Byrd Football Booster Club– I began as the treasurer in 2007, and soon was
voted in as president. My primary job responsibilities were to raise funds to supplement
the team with items that were not funded by the schools. My duties also included working
with the coaches to run monthly meetings and organize and manage the positive direction
of the program off the field. I held this position for approximately 14 years. - William Byrd Booster Club (Main)– My duties here were to obtain monthly reports from
each individual booster club and file them with the CPA monthly and help file the tax
returns each year. - Member of Lynn Haven Baptist Church growing up and a member of Rainbow Forest
Baptist since 1997. - Southampton Home Owners Association– I have been on this board since 2001 and help
make decisions for the community. - Roanoke County Board of Equalization– This is a position where citizens who have
appealed their tax assessments can come before the board to determine if the value of
their real estate is correct.
In conclusion, my roots and support in the Vinton community, including my role as a business
owner, are very important in understanding the needs of everyday life in this vibrant area. I want
to recognize current Vinton Town Manager Pete Peters and his staff for the many new business
ventures coming into town over the last several years. There is a rebirth of the downtown district
with new restaurants, local business, Rosie’s Gaming Emporium, and the many other economic
changes that can be measured. I look forward to guiding and helping to develop the next
generation of local businesses that will impact and help grow the Vinton economic engine for
years to come.
