The Ladies of the Moose have just completed a “Help Us Help Others Food Drive” to provide Thanksgiving meals for 18 Vinton area families (111 individuals). The group collected and distributed groceries, including a turkey with roasting pan, rolls, potatoes, mac and cheese, canned goods, brownie mix, and staples such as peanut butter and jelly, cooking oil, cereal and cereal bars, Pop Tarts, and canned tuna—everything “from breakfast to dessert.”
The women are an informal group made up of the wives and significant others of Vinton Moose Lodge 1121 members. They are continually involved in community service events such as another Food Drive coming up at Christmas, a Pancake Breakfast/Visit with Santa for special needs children this week, sizeable donations to special organizations, and more.
The group contacted the guidance counselors at Vinton-area schools—Herman L. Horn, W. E. Cundiff, Mount Pleasant, and Bonsack Elementary Schools, along with William Byrd Middle and High Schools—for names of families who might benefit from some assistance.
They donated items themselves with additional funds and items provided by Moose Lodge members and Food Lion, who provided Food Lion Feeds boxes.
Families picked up boxes of food at the Moose Lodge on the afternoon of November 20. Ladies working to distribute the meals included Angie Chewning, Carolyn Mills, Leona LaPradd, Nancy Mastry, Sharon Llewlyn, and Sandy Hamblin.
