The William Byrd indoor track team was in Lexington last Saturday to compete in the annual Walt Cormack Invitational at the Virginia Military Institute.
Byrd had some strong performances at the meet. On the boys’ side Wyatte Bailey broke his own indoor school record in the pole vault when he cleared 13 feet, giving him second place overall. Wyatte also finished 14th in the 300m dash with a time of 37.53 while Dylan Hughes finished 21st with a time of 37.97.
In the 1000m run Donald Mullins finished 12th with a time of 2:42.73, qualifying him for the state track meet by over 3 seconds. DeShawn Austin finished 22nd with a time of 8.98 and Landon Martin finished 25th with a time of 9.03. The 4x200m relay of Hughes, Bailey, Brady Reachy and Austin finished 10th with a time of 1:35.21.
Austin also finished 11th in the triple jump with at 19’3. Johnson finished 14th with a jump of 19’1 and Alex Dunn finished 18th with a jump 36’7.
On the girls’ side Sydney Blewett broke the school record in the shot put with a throw of 36’2. Grace Owni qualified for state with a time of 1:23.86 in the 500m dash and Olivia Hurd finished 13th in the 1000m with a state qualifying time of 3:12.04.
This Saturday the Byrd indoor track and field team will be running at the Bulldog Invitational at Liberty University and the Heritage JV invitational at Heritage High School.
