The William Byrd girls picked up their first win in basketball last Friday when they took a 47-40 win at Bassett. The Terriers started slowly and struggled in the fourth quarter but were able to hold on for the win.
“We endured a very slow start in the first quarter and a comeback by Bassett in the fourth quarter,” said Byrd coach Randy Bush. “I’m very proud of how we competed.”
Alexis Helton led the Terriers with 17 points. Kenzie Lee had a dozen and Sam Martin chipped in five for Byrd.
The win followed a 62-36 loss to Christiansburg in Vinton last Wednesday. Logan Andrews led Byrd in that one with 14 points, including two three-point goals. Helton had eight points and Martin had seven.
Byrd completed a home-and-home series with Cave Spring on Tuesday of this week and the Knights swept the season series, winning 67-41 at Cave Spring. Helton had 12 points, Martin and Kenzie Lee had 10 each and Andrews had seven.
“We played with high energy for most of the game,” said Bush. “We are continuing to learn and with this break we have coming up we will continue to focus on the things that will help us to compete better.”
The Terriers are now off until next Wednesday, December 15, when they play host to Hidden Valley.
