The William Byrd golfers will get their turn to host the Blue Ridge District this
week as the regular season tour comes to the Blue Hills golf course. The six district teams will play a round on Tuesday, September 6, at the Roanoke County course.
The district teams played at the Hanging Rock golf club in west Roanoke County on Tuesday and got nine holes in before inclement weather limited the round. Franklin County won the round with a 157 to edge Lord Botetourt by two strokes and maintain their overall lead. After four rounds of play the Eagles are at 1099 and LB is 29 strokes back at 1,128.
William Byrd dropped from third to fourth on the season as Northside shot 160 to pass the Terriers, who came in at 176. Northside, the host team at Hanging Rock, is four strokes up on Byrd for third place at 1,166 to 1,170. Staunton River shot 207 Tuesday and William Fleming had just two golfers in the match.
Northside’s Nick Crawford was the medalist at “The Rock” with a one under par 34. Lord Botetourt’s Ashton Harper was even par at 35 and Sam Fansler of Franklin County was one over with a 36.
Byrd’s best score was a five over par 40 by Clayton Gilmore. Evan Mullen and Kobe Turner were next with 45 each and the fourth scoring Terrier was Andrew Kiker with a 46. Also playing, but not in the top four, were Nathan Carter with a 47 and Colin Murtaugh at 48.
“The team had a great learning experience at a different course,” said Byrd coach Tyler Goodman. “They were hitting shots that they are not necessarily used to hitting.”
