The William Byrd girls’ soccer team has played two games and has yet to allow a goal. The Terriers won at William Fleming last Friday, 8-0, then shut out Franklin County in Vinton on Tuesday, 4-0.
Against Fleming the two Blue Ridge District rivals played with just nine on the field for each team to accommodate Fleming’s low numbers. Hanna Chappell started the scoring early in the first half with an assist by Riley Firebaugh. Byrd’s second goal was a penalty kick due to a handball in the box, and Maddy Simmon converted.
Chappell added two more goals in the first half, assisted by Addisyn St. Clair and Simmons. Anna Milliron scored the fourth goal of the half off an assist by Hannah Sutton and Simmons added another goal off an assist by Milliron to end the first half with Byrd leading 6-0.
The Terriers added two more goals in the second half, the first by Firebaugh, assisted by Briannah Hall, and the second by St. Clair, assisted by Maci Glass.
Against Franklin County Chappell gave Byrd the lead off a corner kick taken by Glass. Simmons added two goals in the first half, the first assisted by Claire Glover and the second assisted by Milliron. Hanna Chappell scored the only second half goal, her fifth in two games.
Byrd will return the trip to Franklin County on Friday.
