The Vinton Public Works Department has installed two new flag poles at their facility on Third Street, now flying a beautiful new American flag and the Virginia state flag. The installation was completed by American Pride Flagpoles, LLC, who also recently installed a new flagpole at the Vinton Police Department entrance to the Municipal Building and at the Vinton Farmers’ Market.
The Public Works Department held a ceremonial flag-raising ceremony on April 1, with the American flag being raised by employee Kevin Orange, a United States Army veteran who served from 1982-1988, and the state flag being raised by Jimmy Brown, who served in the United States Marine Corps in the 1990’s. Orange is the Wastewater Operator for the Town of Vinton; Brown is the Chief Mechanic.
Public Works Director William “Bo” Herndon said that Public Works has completed landscaping the lawn of the Public Works building surrounding the flagpoles and added landscape lighting as well for the flagpoles. The lighting was donated and installed by Alvin Mathis of Corell Electrical, who have been doing some electrical work at the Vinton History Museum in recent days. The Public Works building was constructed in the 1980’s and has needed some sprucing up, including a new awning and a coat of paint.
Several Town of Vinton facilities have made improvements during the pandemic, including the Municipal Building and the Vinton War Memorial, thanks in part to CARES Act Funding.
