William Byrd High School annually has a ceremony for seniors who have committed to playing college athletics in the following year. The students gather for a group picture and individual pictures with family, coaches, teammates and friends.
However, due to the coronavirus pandemic, that was not possible this year. Instead, Byrd athletic director Jason Taylor sent out creative photos of the students with their sports and college choice, as shown on this page.
“We had planned on doing a commitment ceremony but it did not work out for obvious reasons,” said Taylor.
Included are the following: Lexi Powell and Bri Hodges-softball at the University of Lynchburg, Ethan Spraker-baseball at Eastern Mennonite University, Nate Hodges-baseball at Lancaster Bible College, Isaac Howard-soccer at Ferrum, Skylar Mathis-soccer at Greensboro College, Chelie Plaster-swimming at Wingate University, Liah Davis-swimming at Emory & Henry, Logan Baker-football at Christopher Newport University and Trevor Thompson-football at Bluefield College.
