The William Byrd girls remained undefeated in basketball with a win over Cave Spring last week, but not before some anxious moments. The Terriers hung for a 52-48 win in Vinton.
Byrd led 43-28 heading into the final quarter and appeared to have the game under control. However, The Knights scored a bucket to open the fourth quarter, then Byrd had a player score on the wrong basket to cut the lead to 11.
“That seemed to ignite Cave and they went on a 10-1 run after that,” said Byrd coach Brad Greenway.
At that point everything was going the Knights’ way. Byrd was two-for-seven on the free throw line during that stretch and had seven turnovers in the quarter. With all that the Terriers never lost the lead and were able to hang on for the win.
“We’ll learn from that experience and move on,” said Greenway. “We still have not played a complete game yet and that’s what we’re working toward with the extra practice time over the break.”
Sydney Burton and Jacy Marvin had 15 points to lead the Terriers and Megan Grant had 10. Byrd shot just 27 percent from the field in the game.
“Cave zoned us the entire game which we typically like to see,” said Greenway. “In the past we’ve been a team that feeds off of zone defenses and we’ve gotten hot shooting, but we couldn’t find it against Cave. We were still able to control the game for the most part.”
The win lifted Byrd to 7-0 and the girls will have one more game before Christmas, at Northside Friday night. Then they’re off until December 29 at Christiansburg.
