The William Byrd boys and girls cross country teams will be competing in the annual “Knights Crossing” meet at Green Hill Park Saturday. The meet is hosted by Cave Spring High School.
This year’s Knights’ Crossing will be the largest ever, according to Cave Spring girls’ coach Laurence Loesel. As of last week there were 67 high schools entered along with 52 middle school and seven elementary schools. In addition to many teams from Virginia there will be schools from Alabama, Georgia, Kentucky, North Carolina, Tennessee and West Virginia at the meet.
The high school races are divided into the “Red” division for larger schools and out of state teams while the “Black” division is for smaller schools. The “White” races are for all runners who are not in the top 10 of their teams.

8:00 am Open 5K Race for men and women
9:00 am Elementary School Championship 1K Race
9:30 am Girls Middle School Championship 3K Race
10:00 am Boys Middle School Championship 3K Race
10:30 am Girls Red Race 5K – Top 10 runners per team
11:15 am Boys Red Race 5K – Top 10 runners per team
The “Black” race is for smaller schools and all private schools
11:45 am Girls Black Race 5K – Top 10 runners per team
12:30 pm Boys Black Race 5K – Top 10 runners per team
1:15 pm Girls White Race 5k – unlimited
2:00 pm Boys White Race 5k – unlimited
The Terriers competed in a meet at Bassett last Thursday to open the season. The girls were second and the boys were third.
Erin Wienke led the girls with a fourth place finish overall. Also scoring for Byrd were Morgan Fletchall, Kayland Bond, Julia Burek and Brynn Tardy. The JV girls also got placed second with the team of Evie Laherty, Brooke Blankenship, Kinley Moore, Jasmine Allinson and Natalia Ferguson.
Ashton Ashley led the varsity boys, followed by Cam Dalton, Luke Jonston, Greyson Cornett and Jayden Glass. The jayvee boys were second with Ryan Krawcyz, Hunter Board, Zach McDaniel, A.J. Scott and Cade Crawford.
