The new indoor track facility at Roanoke College hosted the Group 1A through 4A track championships last week and William Byrd had athletes competing. The Group 1A/2A meet was held February 28 and March 1 and the 3A and 4A meets were March 2 and 3.
Byrd’s boys finished 30th in Group 4A and the girls did not score. William Fleming won the boys’ championship and E.C. Glass took home the big trophy in the girls’ meet.
Byrd’s 4x800m relay team of Conner Lynch, Westin Recktenwald, Ashton Ashley and Ryan Moore finished 10th overall with a time of 8:31.39. Recktenwald also ran in the open 3200m run and earned all-state honors by placing seventh with a time of 9:45.45. The 4x400m relay of Christian Smith, Jacob Woodcock, Jesse Settle and Jake Barker finished 13th with a time of 3:35.95.
The only girl competing from Byrd was Ellasen Spangler in the shot put. She threw 33 feet 5 inches, which placed her 9th overall in the competition.
The Terrier athletes will start training for the outdoor season, which begins April 1 with the Bradford Relays at E.C. Glass High in Lynchburg.
